10 Facts about Mental Health

The subject of Mental Health is a very sensitive and complicated topic which tacklingstigma aims to create awareness of. My aim is to make this complicated content as accessible and engaging as possible. Below, are some of the key facts and figures for mental illness including those who have made contact mental health services.

  1. At the end of December 2014: 921,498 people were in contact with mental health services
  1. 21,730 people were in hospital on wards for people with mental health needs.
  1. Of those who were discharged from hospital during the month, 73% received a follow up within 7 days from the same provider. This is an important suicide prevention measure.
  1. A 2015 report commissioned by eating disorder charity Beat estimated that over 725,000 people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder.
  1. 16,968 people were subject to the Mental Health Act 1983 and of these 12,533 were detained in hospital (73.9%).
  1. Mental health affects an estimated 450 million people worldwide.
  1. Current figures state that each year in Britain an estimated 1 in 4 adults will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem, though only 230 of every 300 who need help will actually visit their GP.
  1. Anxiety is considered one of the most common mental health problems in the western world; in 2013 there were 8.2 million cases recorded in the UK alone.
  1. In England, women are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders as men.
